Post-Conference Field Trip

Cretaceous to Paleogene Successions in Western Pyrenees, Northern Spain

September 6th

Upper Maastrichtian to lower Eocene deposits at Zumaia. We will visit the outcrops located on the cliffs along the Itzurun beach. Special attention will be paid to the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary, the recently defined Global Stratotype Sections and Points (GSSPs) for the bases of the Selandian and Thanetian Stages, and to the Paleocene-Eocene transition.

-8:00 AM: Departure from Zaragoza. Pick-up point: main campus, opposite the Geology Building.

-After a 4 h bus trip (with a short stop to stretch our legs), the bus will reach the coastal village of Orio (hotel Aisia Orio, http://www.aisiahoteles.com/orio.asp), where we will collect the packed lunch for this day.

-Zumaia (stop 1) is located 30 minutes west of Orio. Don´t miss the magnificent views from the coastal road!

-After the visit to the Zumaia outcrops, we will get back to the hotel Aisia Orio, check-in, relax and have dinner at 9:00 PM.

Lunch, dinner and accommodation are included in the registration fee. Accompanying guests are welcome to visit the outcrops along the beach.

September 7th

Upper Cretaceous to Paleocene deposits at Sopelana, and lower-middle Eocene deposits at Getxo (north of Bilbao). The outcrops to be visited are different cliffs along the Sopelana and Gorrondatxe beaches, respectively. Special attention will be paid to the Cretaceous/Paleogene and the Danian/Selandian boundaries at Sopelana, and to the GSSP for the base of the Lutetian Stage at Gorrondatxe.

-8:30 AM: We will depart from Orio westwards through the provinces of Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia. After a 1.5 h drive the bus will reach Sopelana (stop 2).

-The third and last stop (Gorrondatxe beach section, stop 3) will be visited after a 20 minutes bus ride from Sopelana.

-2:00 PM: Lunch in the nearby village of Getxo (Tellagorri Restaurant, http://www.restaurantetellagorri.com).

-17:00 Return to Zaragoza. Estimated arrival at 21:00.

*Participants who wish to stay in Bilbao (to visit the city and surroundings, or to take a plane from Bilbao international airport) can be dropped off at Bilbao.

**For those who return to Zaragoza, please bear in mind that you have to arrange your own accommodation for the night of September 7th.
